- The proposed exhibit takes the form of a wall display of multiple postcards. These describe the methods and experiences used by a contemporary jeweller when working collaboratively across domains including product design and new technology.
Since 2002, I have been engaged as a contemporary craftsperson in the development of concept designs for personal networked products, focusing for the most part on jewellery as a social phenomenon. In that time, many more practitioners have become interested in similar issues, and recent degree shows have shown a marked tendency towards sensing technologies and light and sound as materials suitable for craft attention. Part of my remit throughout my research has been to develop and examine methods for working with these ?intangible? materials, and to open this area up to others, in order to bring craft sensibilities to bear on the development of ?smart? products and services.
Therefore, this exhibit makes available to others all of the tools and methods I have tried over the last four or five years, with a short explanation for putting them into practice, and a concise appraisal of their strengths and weaknesses. The methods themselves deal both with what might be considered traditional ways of craft working, for example, drawing, and more novel ones, such as user centred design practices and reflections on collaborative and interdisciplinary processes.
The exhibit may open up further questions such as whether craft wants to police its boundaries, and should offer a chance for reflection on current practices in return.
