Nature Of The Research And/Or Practice:
The incorporation of digital technologies into wearable-art forms provides a means to explore new creative possibilities. The proposed exhibition will explore effective hybrid presentation techniques for visually demonstrating the complex transitions from two-dimensional (2D) shapes to three-dimensional (3D) wearable forms.
One direction my textile artwork has taken is in creating non-traditional wearable fabric structures with integrated digitally printed imagery. My recent focus centres on the desire to work with geometric shapes that can transition from 2D to 3D, evolving through many iterations from flat to draped and, ultimately, to complete 3D art-apparel forms. They are conceived to allow the imagery to flow with or react to the structure. It is intended that viewers will spend time analyzing the intersections between image and form.
A key intention of the work is to build on the conversation about the role of crafted artefacts in communicating our relationships to the world. Crafted items are typically used, not simply viewed. On an individual level, when the viewer/user interacts with a crafted item, they enter an unspoken dialogue that began with the hands and/or intentions of the craftsperson. This, in turn, helps the viewer/user reflect on how that item connects them to their environment.
Methods:
This installation-style exhibit will consist of a new body of artwork focused on the integration of digital printing onto three-dimensional fabric structures and environments. The printed imagery will directly relate to the structural forms in the environment and will include visual interplays between the perception of two and three dimensions. This work will involve the viewer in the process of conceptualizing the transitions from 2D shapes to 3D objects by asking them to physically interact with the work. For instance, they might encounter an oddly shaped garment that appears to be growing out of a fabric wall structure. Upon approaching the garment, they will read a sign stating ?try me on.? As they slip their arms into the sleeves, they will subsequently feel the tension/connection that they have created with the entire installation environment. At the same time, video cameras will project the actions of the viewer onto another wall in the installation, allowing them to view themselves externally in their interaction with the space.
Main Findings And/Or Outputs:
Developing and testing hybrid presentation formats to communicate textile art/products for exhibition will influence the discipline as the connections between technology, hybrid-craft and fine art become more explicit.
The images shown with this submission represent early investigations into the themes for this new body of work.
