Crafts as a research object has been studied from multiple perspective in different sciences or arts. The intention of this paper is to give a theoretical, ontological epistemological, outline of domains and their relationships concerning research on making craft objects from the viewpoint of craft science represented as an independent discipline at the University of Helsinki, in the department of Home Economics and Craft Sciences.

Craft objects represent the past, present and future as cultural representations. Makers of the future have at hand the constant problem of solving how nature each time can be modified by man transform their ideas into cultures and cultural objects. In between these limits there exists the human transformation process as internal, external and experiential processes in the given cultural and spatiotemporal context.

Research of crafts is based on a multidisciplinary framework as a combination of cultural studies, technologies and the human being. Human cognitive skills, intentions, corporality and emotions are a part of the processes necessary to initiate and generate the experiential framework to process the intended craft objects. Craft design ideas become into existence in the socio-cultural environment, making or materialising these ideas emerge from human skilful activity. These standing points provide three dimensions as research fields through which craft objects emerge transforming nature into culture.

The aim and objectives of this project need to be much more clearly stated in order to understand what contribution the mapping of domains of craft research might make to current debate about the future of craft.

This abstract needs to be contextualised and more focused, it speaks in general terms of many craft issues but does not pin down exactly the area it intends to talk specifically about.
