Can digital technology work in harmony with traditional craft skills and create sympathetic objects that reflect the true spirit of maker? Through synthesising natures unsustainable into permanent states, the Long Exposure series demonstrates the potential of digital technology to create outside the established boundaries of craft. Decoding Nature will illustrate a hybrid practice embracing the essence of tradition interwoven with the promise of technology?s new horizon.

The proposed installation stems from current research examining the concept of solid-motion. The Long Exposure series depicts the trajectory of a bird or moth within a solid trace-echo. Through utilising cinematic technology to motion capture the flight path of the subjects; the compounded frame-by-frame stills illustrate the movement through a period of time. The form is generated through CAD software and subsequently materialised through rapid prototyping (RP) technology or internal laser etching (ILE). The sensory experience of solid-motion creates a unique haptic relationship between time and motion.

The Long Exposure series will be defined through two artefacts. The first (RP or Glass) will be two birds captured during a frozen moment in time (Image. 1,2,3). Their suspended presence create an essence of the absolute. The second (ILE) is an investigation into the erratic behaviour of a moth while circling a light bulb (Image. 4,5). The resultant form will be materialised within optical glass, encapsulating the ephemeral echo of the moth?s trajectory.

Decoding Nature presents a fresh perspective to the visual identity of craft, broadening our minds towards a new creative language.

A brilliant use of rapid protoyping as a method for making work which is incapable of being made by hand.

An extremely interesting proposal.
