This exhibit is a visual analysis reflecting on the innovative craft practice of the first significant fine crafts woman in modern Scotland, Phoebe Anna Traquair. It intends to identify and verify a visual method for analysing innovative craft practice.

The exposure to the actual works enables a modern interpretation of Traquair?s innovative work between 1885 and 1901 to be undertaken, including the examination of three buildings in Edinburgh (1. the mortuary chapel of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children 2. the Song School of St Mary?s Episcopal Cathedral 3. the Mansfield Traquair Centre) and two embroideries (1. the Salvation of Mankind 2. the Progress of Soul) which she created concurrently.

After the visual and contextual experience of Traquair?s ?life journey?, the concepts of ?visual language? and space / dimension in Traquair?s works are ones that mirror views of space and vision from a myriad of perspectives. With all of these examples in mind, it seems clear that visual analysis can enable us to decode craft objects and process in a way never before possible. The addition of interactive media tools allowed the consideration of the positions of a craftsperson in space by representing the original working environment.

This exhibit will further interpret the unique visual language demonstrated by the ?particular tacit spatial awareness? of craft practitioner and, by deconstructing space, illuminate the craft process. It will also focus mainly on the arrangement of compositional elements within three dimensionally play.

The visual analytical model that is being proposed needs clarification. The methods that are being combined together to create the model need to be defined and related to the images submitted for the exhibition. I am not clear about how Traquair's craft process is being revealed or the significance of this to a broader understanding of craft practice. Please also see comments on the abstract submission.

Reading visual languages and articulating visual thinking is very difficult and the left handside image appears to offer a way of doing this for one of Traquair's major pieces. I think this way of looking at Traquair's work has not been done before. If this is the case the work can offer insight into the relation between craft and narrative and the value of history to contemporary making when viewed from a fresh perspective.

I agree with the public comment by pv. This type of visual analysis is unique and innovative. I certainly is a fresh way of looking at and analyzing craft using contemporary technology. It will be very interesting to see how this work developes!
