My interest as a textile designer is in woven cloth. I am currently on the Crafts Council Next Move scheme based in the Design Centre at University College Falmouth.

My work is mainly woven on a computerised jacquard loom, a technology used widely in the mass production of textiles. However I use the digital jacquard loom to produce one off pieces and bespoke textiles for interior spaces. This technology enables the production of large scale complex work which would otherwise be unachievable by hand weaving techniques. My wall hung textiles relates to the historical use of textiles both as decoration and practical insulation.

For the New Craft Future Voices Exhibition I propose to exhibit a site specific piece. The woven textile will be made in direct response to the space or surrounding spaces of the Gallery. To illustrate this, I have included images of the site specific textiles woven for the curated exhibition of Hidden Art Cornwall Design Fair at Godolphin House in August 2006. The work was positioned a few meters away from the 300 year old wisteria plant from which the reference photographs were taken.

My making process starts by taking photographs. These are usually abstract visual images of natural forms and textures. I import these images into the weave software and develop them into designs by applying weave structures to the patterns. I make a selection of yarns in response to the photographs and then use these as a palette to select from when I am weaving. They are usually a combination of synthetic yarns, such as metallic yarns, and natural yarns, like linen, paper and silk.

Operating the loom enables me to design during the process of making. I respond to the fabric as it is being made, changing the design and the yarns intuitively, in the same way a traditional hand weaver works in response to the threads in front of him. The outcome is therefore not predetermined and unique each time. Resulting fabrics retain a very personal hands on and considered feel.

As a result of the methods I use, the work produced has a distinct identity, different from hand woven textiles and ones designed only on software. It allows me, the maker, to become an integral part of what is otherwise an exclusive digital process. As a result, my method merges craft and digital process redefining the hand made and machine made.

The textile work is very refined but the proposal to make a site specific piece for the ocnference is not feasible.

I agree, the work is very considered. However, communication of the methods and conceptual underpinning require maturation.
