The aim of the proposed exhibition is to explore the relationship between craft and digital process in the context of wearable technology and evolving Smart textiles.

The proposed exhibits are a number of crafted prototype garments and accessories that were created as a result of the Adaptive Craft Award*. This research explored the integration of textile sensors into garments and the potential of Smart and adaptive materials as components in the creation of responsive and expressive textiles.

Originally these garments were showcased in an interactive dance performance for children. Dancers wore costumes with sensors integrated into them that enabled them to control visual projections onto a theatrical backdrop. The performance revolved around a story told through narrative, visuals and physical theatre. The core of the story was about animals that could change their appearance and visually this was achieved using a layering structure characteristic of some digital processes.

A visual aspect of the show was the exploration of the boundaries between physical and virtual craft. A combination of traditional and digital tools and processes were employed in the production of textiles for the costumes.

It is proposed that this exhibit consists of an installation that includes a series of prototype garments, footage of the original performance, a functioning interactive exhibit and a dancer who will demonstrate the wearable technology in a live performance scenario.

*Adaptive Craft is the collaborative initiative of the Crafts Council of Ireland and Adaptive Information Cluster at Dublin City University. It was created to encourage dialogue between craftsperson and scientists.
