This paper proposal stems from an ongoing doctoral research aiming to trace the lineage of crafts in architecture in order to come up with an argument for sustaining materiality, embodied knowledge and context awareness within the design praxis that is undergoing a substantial change in the Information Age. The epistemological basis of the discussion is provided by the Aristotelian distinction between the three types of knowledge: techne ? technical knowledge; episteme ? scientific knowledge; and phronesis ? moral-practical knowledge. At its present stage, the research seeks to validate the argument for the sustenance of crafts practices as a repository of unarticulated knowledge that forms a vital part of our intangible heritage. Aiming to find continuing trends concerning materiality, the focus is presently on the processes of knowledge production based on the close-knit interaction between craftsmen and architects involved in pre-modern building production. In this context, the specificities of stonemasonry in architectural practice will provide the case studies for discussing the implications of materiality in the initial stages of architectural design, and how the modes of representation fall short when the actual manufacturing process starts.
