For many participants in the Paper Prayers and Phumani Craft projects in South Africa, livelihoods are generated from their craft. The AIDS Action project as described above is aimed to empower people to make choices to seek out voluntary testing and counseling as well as treatment and care. Through art making, embroidered narratives photography, rural South African women are able to share their stories and use their skills to become activists in their communities. Assisting others to get tested and treatment saves lives and can reduce the number of AIDS orphans in those communities.
This exhibition will consist of crafted products from paper and cloth, as well as PhotoVoice narratives, embroidered visual stories, Quilts and Paper Prayers which are small artworks made as a gift for healing and well-being.

A powerful example of the role of craft in the 21st century. The process and experience of craft are of more value than the end product. The extended proposal should reflect this, seeking to develop the discussion of the role of narrative and storytelling.

This exhibit is a strong example of craft practice as creating narrative and would provide another dimension to our understanding of contemporary craft in the 21st century.
