Background
During the course of my PhD I explored photographic image manipulation in relation to printed textile design. I developed new working strategies through the use of digital tools, such as, scanners and digital cameras. New visual qualities emerged as part of this experimentation, which may be described as being part of an emerging visual language.

Inspired by the pioneering work of Muybridge and Marey in the 19th century who explored the capture of movement in photography I began to explore how I might use both traditional and digital tools to capture movement. Through experimentation, with a range of processes, including moving objects on a scanner, I found I was increasingly intrigued by this process which created incredibly beautiful visual effects. This approach has continued to be of interest, I am fascinated by the scanners interpretation of the object as it moved along its surface. Interested in the lasers reactions to the materials and surfaces being captured and the ready images offered by digital cameras. The work for my PhD primarily considered the designs I created in 2 dimensions.

However, during post-doctoral research I began to work on 3 dimensional textile forms and to consider how I might use the movement created during the image generation stage to both enhance and explore the relationship between both 2 and 3 dimensions. The work I created for an exhibition ?Transforming:shape? considered the impact of pattern on form but also led to questions about how movement affected the relationship between the pattern and form. The work of Liz Rideal who has explored the movement of fabric in her ?Drapery? images also encouraged me to consider these concepts further.

Research
I wish to develop and explore further the relationship between the movement involved in the creation of images on scanners or via cameras and combine those images choreographed from physical movement of shape gathered by projecting images onto a moving form. This combination of images will then be recaptured and remerged into the digital work, manipulated further and so the exploration of movement is explored in a multi-directional way.

Aims
To create and explore new image creation ad image manipulation processes.
To consider further the impact of pattern and movement on form.
To extend the visual language available to textile designers through capture, manipulation and fabric resolve.

Methods
Innovative approaches to image generation.
Creative image manipulation.
The projection of images onto choreographed moving forms.
The analysis and presentation of form through film, image still and fabric samples.

Fasinating work. I am not sure what exactly is being proposed for the conference? A new set of imagery to demonstrate this new visual obsession? The imagery looks exciting, could the written part of the submission clarify what is the intended outcome for visual publication?

The consideration of "movement created during the image generation stage to both enhance and explore the relationship between both 2 and 3 dimensions" is very interesting, both theoretically and practically.

Greater articulation is required about how the contributor considered the impact of pattern on form and what the resultant questions about how movement affected the relationship between the pattern and form were. Also, can the context, in terms of the level of innovation be clarified. How new is this work/method, nationally and internationally?
