An interesting paper based on some thorough research. The paper requires more explanation of the regional focus of the research ? outside the US, readers will not appreciate what the regional differences are (eg: Midwest work ethic, etc.). So why is a regional focus necessary in the research, and what does it seek to establish? Also, the conclusions should be developed to explain how the research will develop in future.

The paper presents emerging outcomes from ongoing research on a very important issue ? the ethical dimensions of craft and design practices. It uses an interesting model for understanding value systems (Thompson, 2000), and reports on 20 interviews with US craftspeople. The intention is to interview 50, so it should be made clear that this paper represents work in progress, or else it could be criticized for a generalised and incomplete picture of attitudes and approaches. However, some good evidence seems to be emerging that suggests craftspeople have a real sensitivity to ethical issues. Whilst this is very positive it might be valuable to draw out counter arguments more, so that the research maintains a critical edge (this may emerge as further interviews are carried out). I would have appreciated a more indepth discussion of the model and also a drawing together in the conclusion of the key outcomes (i.e. from the bulleted points in the various sections) as a summary reminder.
