- An interesting piece of work that covers a wide area. It is written in a journalistic style and there are many comments without foundation and/or are journalistic flourishes, for example ?Most artisans barely scrape by on very little money, do work that is repetitive and tedious and is neither creative of particulary relevant to their culture?. The author is advised to be cautious, and intellectually ground such comments with evidence.
One of the most interesting aspects of this study is the implications in terms of future craft research agenda ? what are they? I would suggest this be articulated and used to re-shape the discussion and conclusion aspect of the paper. This could help link the work more strongly with the conference.

- This is a great paper ? it covers a wide ground, but presents good examples of positive sustainable craft practices. However, it is not an academic paper. I suspect that the authors would have no interest in defining aims and objectives, detailed references and removing polemical flourishes. So I?m prepared to referee this on the basis that it?s a good piece of journalism and consider whether it fits with the conference. It would certainly stimulate interest and therefore I would welcome its inclusion. But I would like to see the final section rewritten. To connect fully with the conference there should be two themes in particular explored: 1. What further research is necessary here? For example, there is an assumption that all of the projects cited are effective, but where is the real evaluation? How should we evaluate such initiatives? 2. In this new 21st century arts and crafts movement, what is the role of the art craft maker in the west? How can western makers better work with / support makers in the developing world? How do we define solidarity in the new age of craft?
Suggested Parallel Track: Collaborative Practice
